About this Site

Mouse-over for tips, comments
Hello! Here is a site that will give you a handle on the complex world of Western Fine Art. This is a subject that has been studied in depth by an army of historians, archeologists, critics, philosophers and intellectuals of every stripe. Tremendous sums of money hinge on the word of this critic or that expert whether a work of art is genuine or a forgery. The styles and symbols are signposts that every historian depends upon, while the creators, themselves, may have lived out their lives in relative poverty.

So, where do we start; what do we do? First, we will rely on the list of 180 "isms" and schools of art to create a comparative structure. Then, we will create quizzes that ensure that the student at least looks at the pictures and tries to categorize them. The quizzes will be in the form of "which school of art does the pop-up picture belong to," a, b, c, or d? .Wav files may be added for very young students, or those to whom reading English is foreign or difficult.

Occasionally, we will give the student historical tips that they may investigate at their leisure. If at the end of completing this course, the student is simply more confident in their studies, we have accomplished our goal. In the future new lists may be created to accommodate African, Oriental, South Asian and Middle Eastern art along the same lines.

It is not matter of Chauvinism that we proceed as we do, but the constraints placed by money and time and previous work done in English concerning Western Art, or Fine Art. Also, some artists may fall into more than one category. We will either avoid quizzing on these, or if they are very important, note this in the quiz question.
